We attended the Hawaiian Juggling Festival Feb. 11-18. It was held at Belly Acres, the home of some Hawaiian juggling friends. There are many pictures of the juggling festival here. On one of the many excursions from the festival we hiked with others to New Beach and Fox's Landing. We climbed through a tiny hole in the earth into an old lava tube and then through the dark tube to the sea. We sailed on Hilo Bay with our friend Kiko, then learned about Hawaiian history as he taught a lesson to a school class in Hilo.
The lava was flowing on the surface from Kilauea volcano this year, so after the festival we drove through Volcanoes National Park and down the Chain of Craters Road to see the lava at dusk. We were amazed to get within about 50 yards of the red-hot stream of lava flowing into the ocean. We were so close that you could feel the heat and smell the fumes. We touched the warm lava that had flowed over the road just five days before. It's an experience we won't forget. We stayed in a little cottage with a view of the ocean. It was in the subdivision next to BellyAcres where the juggling festival was held. Above are some pictures of the cottage and Christyl, the owner who lives across the street. The beauty of the islands was evident throughout the week with magnificent sunsets and rainbows. Content and
